2004-101

Hong Kong – Global private equity firm The Carlyle Group today announced that Wayne Wen-Tsui Tsou has joined Carlyle as Managing Director and will lead venture investments in the Asia-Pacific region. Mr. Tsou comes to Carlyle from Warburg Pincus, where he was Managing Director and head of Asian technology investments since 1998. Mr. Tsou, who will be based in Hong Kong, will start on March 1, 2004. His appointment allows Tony Jansz to lead a number of new corporate projects in the region for Carlyle.

Daniel A. D’Aniello, Carlyle Managing Director and Co-founder, said, “I am pleased to welcome Wayne to Carlyle. He has distinguished himself at the highest levels of his profession and will be a great asset to our Asia venture activities. His expertise in technology, business services, and telecom complements Carlyle’s Asia venture investment focus.

Asia continues to grow in importance to Carlyle and we plan to grow our presence in the region. Wayne’s appointment will enable Tony Jansz, who co-founded Carlyle Asia Venture Partners (CAVP) in 1999, to develop new corporate projects in the region and globally for Carlyle. Under Tony’s leadership, Carlyle Asia Venture has made a number of successful and high profile investments including e-Access, Ctrip, NESS Display, and Financial Systems Software. Tony will also continue in the management and oversight of certain existing CAVP investments in the region, specifically in South and South East Asia.”

Mr. Tsou said, “Carlyle’s financial resources, sector expertise and focus, and global platform all make this a particularly exciting opportunity. I look forward to working with Tony Jansz and the impressive team he has built. The pan-Asian region holds great promise and I look forward to making investments that will serve Carlyle’s investors well.”

Prior to joining Carlyle, Mr. Tsou worked for seven years at Warburg Pincus, where he was head of technology investments for Asia including Japan and a member of Warburg Pincus’s Global Information Technology Group and Global Communications Group. Mr. Tsou has led a number of prominent venture deals in Asia including Warburg Pincus’s investments in Harbour Networks and AsiaInfo Holdings.

Prior to Warburg Pincus, Mr. Tsou worked at Morgan Stanley and Lazard Frères where he was involved in the privatization of major telecom operators in South East Asia and M&Amp;A activities of large U.S. technology companies. In the early 1990s, Mr. Tsou worked at Bellcore (now Telcordia), the central R&D arm of the then seven U.S. Regional Bell Operating Companies, where he was one of the principal system architects for nationwide high-speed data communications services and standards including Frame Relay, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), and Synchronous Optical Network (SONET). While at Bellcore, he also led the formation of an Asia-Pacific industry interest group for promoting the global interconnection of high-speed data networks, and chaired industry workshops in Taiwan and Singapore on emerging opportunities in high-speed data communications services in the Asia-Pacific.

Mr. Tsou, age 37, earned a Juris Doctor from the Harvard Law School, an MBA from the Harvard Business School, a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), and a Bachelor of Science summa cum laude in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan. He is a native of Shanghai.
