2004-050

Washington, DC – Global private equity firm The Carlyle Group today issued the following statement by Managing Director William E. Kennard:

“We are quite pleased that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has approved The Carlyle Group’s applications to acquire Verizon Hawaii, Inc. from Verizon Communications, Inc. This is a significant milestone in our efforts to purchase Verizon Hawaii and to serve the local community as a local company. In its public notice, the FCC said, ‘The Wireline Competition Bureau has determined that grant of this application serves the public interest.’ The FCC’s Wireless Telecommunications Bureau and the International Bureau also approved the transaction.”

“In granting the applications, the Wireline Competition Bureau considered but rejected concerns from Pacific LightNet, Inc. (PLNI) related to the proposed transaction’s impact on service, rates and national security. It also noted that Sandwich Isles Communications, Inc. filed comments in support of the proposed transfer of control.”

“Carlyle looks forward to working closely with Hawaii officials as the review and consideration of this sales process continues. We are committed to the long-term success of Verizon Hawaii and providing high quality products and services to the people of Hawaii.”
