The Carlyle Group Announces Duncan Lewis Named Senior Advisor to Carlyle Global Telecommunications and Media Group

London, England – Global private equity firm The Carlyle Group announced today that Duncan Lewis, former Chief Executive Officer and President of GTS/Ebone Inc., will join the firm as Senior Advisor to its global telecommunications and media group on April 2nd, 2003. Mr. Lewis will be based in London.


As Senior Advisor, Mr. Lewis will assist Carlyle in developing strategy and identifying investments in the telecommunications and media sector worldwide.


Jim Attwood, Carlyle Managing Director and head of telecommunications and media said, “Duncan has a tremendously broad and varied background, and is a skilled operating executive. He brings a wealth of relevant experience to our global telecommunications and media efforts.”


Mr. Lewis said, “Carlyle has built an exceptional global franchise in telecommunications and media. I look forward to working with the firm to uncover new investment opportunities and support the development of its existing portfolio companies.”


Mr. Lewis served at GTS from January 2001 to March 2002 when the company was sold. At the time, GTS ran Europe’s largest optical and IP network carrying more than 25 percent of Europe’s Internet traffic.


Prior to joining GTS, Mr. Lewis was Managing Director and Chief Corporate Development Officer of Equant NV from 1998 to 2000, which operates the world’s largest global data network exclusively serving multinational companies. Mr. Lewis had overall responsibility for day-to-day global operations at Equant as well as the strategic development of the business.
Before Equant, Mr. Lewis’s senior roles included Chief Executive Officer, Granada Media Group; Chief Executive Officer, Mercury Communications, then a subsidiary of Cable and Wireless. He also served as Managing Director, Europe and Managing Director, Business Networks at Cable and Wireless. He also held various senior roles at British Telecom, including Director of Procurement, Strategy, and Network Services. Prior to joining British Telecom, Mr. Lewis worked in telecommunications manufacturing and in the computing industry; and for a time was at the National Economic Development Office.
Mr. Lewis, 51, attended Cambridge University from 1971 to 1976. From 1969 to 1970 he served in Senegal for Voluntary Service Overseas. He was a visiting professor of Business Management at Strathclyde University from 1994 until 2002. He is a Director of each of the following organizations: Viridian plc, the British Library, CompleTel NV, and the Cheek by Jowl Theatre Company.
