Gabriel Li Returns to Carlyle As Managing Director, Overseeing Technology Venture Investments in North Asia

Washington, DC and Hong Kong – Global private equity firm The Carlyle Group today announced that Gabriel Li has rejoined the firm as a managing director. Mr. Li will be based in Hong Kong and co-lead Carlyle’s technology venture investments in Asia alongside current managing director Tony Jansz. Carlyle Asia Venture Partners invests in promising technology companies located primarily in China, Taiwan, Korea, and India.


Carlyle managing director and co-founder David M. Rubenstein said, “We are quite pleased to have Gabriel back with us. Gabriel knows technology investing and he knows Asia. He will be a great asset in our Asian investment operation.”


Prior to returning to Carlyle, Mr. Li was a managing director at Robertson Stephens in San Francisco where he co-managed a fund that invested in public and private technology companies. Before that, he was a director with Carlyle Asia Venture Partners based in Hong Kong. Previously, Mr. Li worked at Orchid Asia Holdings, LLC as a partner and at McKinsey & Co. in Hong Kong and Los Angeles, respectively.


The Carlyle Group has two venture funds in Asia: Carlyle Asia Venture Partners I, a $159 million fund that is fully invested, and Carlyle Asia Venture Partners II, a $170 million fund that was launched in mid-2002. Mr. Li will focus on technology related opportunities in the semiconductor design and manufacturing, display, and wireless device sectors.


Mr. Li is on the board of Ctrip.com International, the largest online travel services company in China and one of the most promising investments in Carlyle’s first Asia venture fund.


Mr. Li, 34, graduated summa cum laude from the University of California at Berkeley and earned his M.S. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his M.B.A. from Stanford Business School.
