The Carlyle Group Adds Two Senior Leaders to Its Asian PE Platform

2018-026

Strategic Hires Amid a Major Push in Southeast Asia

Hong Kong, Jakarta and Singapore – Global alternative asset manager The Carlyle Group  (NASDAQ: CG) today announced its hiring of Robby Winarta as Managing Director and Long Hoang as Director to its Asian private equity platform. Mr. Winarta, who will be based in Jakarta and begin on July 2, will lead the firm’s investment activities in Indonesia. Long Hoang, starting on June 1 and based in Singapore, will focus on investment activities in Vietnam.

Greg Zeluck, Managing Director and Co-Head of the Carlyle Asia buyout team, said, “We are delighted to have two senior veterans with significant industry experience and deep understanding of these local markets join us as we expand our Southeast Asia presence. Robby is an Indonesian national and a proven leader, with nearly two decades of investment banking experience in Indonesia. Long is a native of Vietnam and has extensive experience investing in Vietnam, Myanmar, Thailand and Singapore. Their appointments come as Carlyle seeks to further expand its presence in the region, where we believe there will be increasing numbers of attractive investment opportunities going forward.

Mr. Winarta said, “I am pleased to join Carlyle Asia, one of Asia’s broadest and strongest private equity platforms. Indonesia is a dynamic and fast-growing country, which I expect to yield interesting investment opportunities driven by attractive demographics and a rising middle class. I look forward to leveraging Carlyle’s global industry experience and regional knowledge to support its investment activities in Indonesia and to create long-term value for local companies.”

Prior to joining Carlyle, Mr. Winarta worked at Credit Suisse for 20 years, most recently as Head of Indonesia Investment Banking Coverage, a position that he held for five years. He has been based in Jakarta for 16 years, and prior to that worked with Credit Suisse in New York and Singapore. He earned his BSc from Northwestern University.

Before joining Carlyle, Mr. Hoang was a Vice President at TPG Capital Asia Growth covering Singapore and Vietnam. Prior to that, he was a Director at Navis Capital Partners, and worked at Standard Chartered Private Equity (Singapore), Dragon Capital Group (Vietnam), and Vinacapital Group (Vietnam). He earned his MBA from Columbia Business School and BA from Amherst College.

With the additions of Robby and Long, Carlyle’s Southeast Asian team will now consist of eight investment professionals, focusing principally on small and large market opportunities in Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines, and opportunistically pursuing investments in other markets.

Carlyle established its presence in Asia in 1998 and now has nine offices in the region. From 1998 through to March 31, 2018, Carlyle’s Asian private equity platform has invested more than US$15 billion of equity, and currently has US$16.3 billion of assets under management.
