New York, NY – Global alternative asset manager The Carlyle Group (NASDAQ: CG) today announced that Stephen Wise has been promoted to Global Head of Carlyle’s Heath Care team, effective at the beginning of this year. Karen Bechtel, the founding group head who transitioned to co-head last year, continues as a Managing Director and maintain her service on a number of Carlyle portfolio company boards.

Ms. Bechtel and Mr. Wise have co-led the Health Care team for the past year. Since joining Carlyle in 2005, Ms. Bechtel has overseen a number of significant healthcare investments including MultiPlan, PPD, Healthscope and HCR-ManorCare, with the group under her leadership investing nearly $6 billion in equity.

Mr. Wise, a 10-year Carlyle veteran, has spent his entire Carlyle career working with Ms. Bechtel to produce Carlyle’s strong track record in the healthcare sector. He has led or been a key contributor to deals including Rede D’Or, Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics and PPD.

Peter Clare, Co-Head of U.S. Buyout and Carlyle Deputy CIO for Corporate Private Equity, said: “Steve is a proven investor and we expect that he will build upon the level of excellence that Karen has established.”

Ms. Bechtel came to Carlyle following a distinguished 28-year career at Morgan Stanley, where she was that firm’s first female partner and, among other roles, led health care investments as a member of the investment committee for the Morgan Stanley Capital Partners IV Fund; was Co-head of the Financial Sponsors Group; ran the Corporate Restructuring Group; was founder and head of Princes Gate Private Equity Investors, a $650 million bridge equity fund; and served as Managing Director in the Mergers and Acquisitions department.

Mr. Wise joined Carlyle’s Health Care team from New York-based private equity firm JLL Partners in 2006.
