The Carlyle Group Engages Former PartnerRe Interim CEO David Zwiener as an Operating Executive to Support the Financial Services Team

2016-025

New York, NY – Global alternative asset manager The Carlyle Group (NASDAQ: CG) today announced that David Zwiener, former interim CEO of PartnerRe, has been engaged as an Operating Executive with the Global Financial Services team. He began his duties this week.

As an Operating Executive, Mr. Zwiener will advise the Carlyle team on industry and operational due diligence for potential investments and may serve on boards of Carlyle portfolio companies in his area of expertise. He becomes part of a group of more than 25 senior business executives – with an average of 40 years of experience – who have been engaged as consultants to help Carlyle invest wisely and create value across a range of industries.

Olivier Sarkozy, Managing Director and head of the Global Financial Services team, said, “This is a homecoming of sorts for David, having co-headed the group in 2007-2008 prior to becoming CFO of Wachovia, and we are thrilled to welcome him back in his capacity as a consultant. His deep operational experience in both the insurance and banking industries will be a great resource to us as we look to build value in current and future investments.”

Mr. Zwiener said, “This is a particularly promising time to invest in the global financial services sector. I am impressed with the portfolio of investments Olivier and his team have assembled and I am excited to help Carlyle work with and support great companies.”

At PartnerRe, Mr. Zwiener was interim CEO since January 2015 and a member of the company’s board since 2010.  Prior to his role as interim CEO, Mr. Zwiener was a Principal at Dowling Capital Partners.  He previously served as Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at Wachovia Corporation.  From 2007-2008, he was a Managing Director and Co-Head of Carlyle’s Financial Institutions Group. He also served as President of Property Casualty Operations, as well as CFO, at The Hartford Financial Services Group.

Mr. Zwiener is currently a member of the board of VOYA Financial, and is Chairman of the Audit Committee. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Duke University and his MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.
