The Carlyle Group Names Sunil Kaul Southeast Asia Head of the Asia Buyout Advisory Team

Carlyle Veteran to Lead Investment Advisory Activities in Southeast Asia 

Hong Kong, China – Global alternative asset manager The Carlyle Group (NASDAQ: CG) today named Managing Director Sunil Kaul Head of Southeast Asia of the Carlyle Asia buyout advisory team, effective immediately. Mr. Kaul joined Carlyle in August 2008 and will continue to be based in Singapore.

Mr. Kaul has nearly 30 years of experience across private equity, corporate and consumer banking.  Since joining Carlyle, he has advised on investments across Asia and worked on several notable transactions.

Greg Zeluck, Managing Director and Co-Head of the Carlyle Asia buyout advisory team, said, “Sunil is a Carlyle veteran with a wealth of experience in the private equity and financial services industries. With his deep industry expertise and strong networks, Sunil has significantly contributed to the success of many of our investments in Asia over the last seven years. In this newly created role, Sunil will lead our investment advisory activities in Southeast Asia as we continue to see great opportunities in this fast-growing region.”

Prior to joining Carlyle, Mr. Kaul served as the president of Citibank Japan, covering the bank's corporate and retail banking operations. He concurrently served as the Chairman of Citi's credit card and consumer finance companies in Japan. He was also a Member of Citi's Global Management Committee and Global Consumer Planning Group.

In his earlier roles, Mr. Kaul served as the Head of Retail Banking for Citi in Asia Pacific. He has also held senior positions in Business Development for Citi's Global Transaction Services based in New York, Transaction Services Head for Citi Japan based in Tokyo and Global Cash Business Management Head for ABN Amro based in Holland.

Mr. Kaul earned his post graduate degree in management from the Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore and a bachelor’s degree in technology from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.

The Carlyle Asia buyout advisory team has a strong track record of advising on control and significant minority investments in well established companies across the Asia Pacific ex-Japan region. Carlyle has eight investment professionals dedicated to Southeast Asia with offices in Singapore and Jakarta. As of June 30, 2015, Carlyle has invested approximately US$15.4 billion of equity in the Asia Pacific region.
