William O. Smales is an Associate Director focused on European buyout and development capital opportunities in the telecommunications & media and technology & business services sectors. He is based in London.
Since joining Carlyle in 2007, Mr. Smales has been actively involved with Carlyle’s investment in current portfolio companies The Foundry and Arsys Internet, S.L. Mr. Smales was also a member of the transaction team that executed Carlyle’s investment in The Mill; the investment in The Mill was exited in April 2011, when it was acquired by Barclays Private Equity.
Prior to joining Carlyle, Mr. Smales was with PIPC, a division of Cognizant Technology Solutions, where he was involved in post acquisition integration programs in the United Kingdom.
Mr. Smales received his M.B.A. from INSEAD Business School. He received a LLB and a B.Com in economics from the University of Otago, New Zealand. He has been admitted to the Bar in England and New Zealand.
Mr. Smales is on the Board of Directors of The Foundry and was previously on the Board of Directors of The Mill.
